Butterfield was a founding member of the Steering Committee, created under the auspices of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, that conceived, planned and carried out the research leading to the exhibition.
Butterfield directed the campaign of new photography of the Gates of Paradise, working with Italy's most celebrated art photographer, Antonio Quattrone.
Butterfield wrote the major interpretative essay for the catalogue.
